Background of the Study
Online feminist movements have emerged as pivotal in challenging traditional gender roles and catalyzing change in societal perceptions of equality. Recent studies indicate that digital platforms are reshaping discourses on gender by providing spaces for marginalized voices and critical discussions (Okoro, 2023; Eze, 2024). In Owerri West, the surge of feminist activism online has coincided with broader socio-cultural transformations, reflecting both global influences and local dynamics. The interplay between technology and feminist ideologies has prompted significant debates on equality, inclusivity, and representation. Contemporary research reveals that online feminist content not only informs public opinions but also mobilizes community action, influencing political and social policies (Adebayo, 2023). With rapid digitalization, these movements provide a rich tapestry of narratives that both challenge and redefine gender norms. The discussion encompasses historical struggles, emerging digital rhetoric, and community-driven responses that impact everyday life. As activists harness social media tools, the transformation in perceptions toward gender equality continues to evolve, demanding scholarly attention to understand its broader implications and the resistance it sometimes meets in traditional settings (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized role of online feminist movements, there remains ambiguity regarding their actual impact on gender equality perceptions in Owerri West. Existing literature offers mixed insights, with some scholars arguing that digital activism leads to progressive change, while others note persistent traditional mindsets. This discord creates a gap in understanding how online content influences individual and communal beliefs in a local context. The problem further extends to issues of representation, misinformation, and the sustainability of these digital campaigns (Udo, 2024).
